The workshop is specifically oriented to the communities inhabiting the Waddensea shore of the Dutch province Groningen. The workshop will be led by Hans Fidom, professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with a background in sound research; by Michiel Huijsman, leader of the Amsterdam based collective SoundTrackCity, with a background in sound collecting fieldwork and disseminating sonic knowledge to the general public; and by Jasmine Karimova, composer and musician.
The workshop will gather research data in the form of immaterial data (audio recordings) at the Waddensea shores, both outdoor and indoor (in selected village cathedrals along the shore). Processing this data on the third day is meant to provide sonic materials and inspiration for the artists-in-residency engaged by the SHORES program in 2026. The end result will become available at the Werelderfgoedcentrum Waddenzee in Lauwersoog, and in the form of a music for the local community; the idea is that musickers can easily perform that music and improvise on it.
The first day of the workshop will be dedicated to collecting natural sounds along the shores of the Waddensea, introduced by Michiel Huijsman; the second day cultural sounds, introduced by Jasmine Karimova. The third day is about sharing and discussing the results and processing them to create a library of sounds for the SHORES-artists in the second phase of the project.
